FOODS AND WEIGHT LOSS |
Any food that contributes little or absolutely no nutrient value to the diet
but instead provides extra calories, carbohydrates and fats is called junk food.
Junk food is extremely addictive and has unfortunately become an American way
of life. Some examples include pastries, candy bars, high fat chips, hamburgers
and other high fat foods from fast food outlets. These foods are fun and tasty
and people are attracted to it for quick energy but they are bad for their overall
health. Cutting out the junk food from your daily diet will help you lose weight
faster than any other thing you can do.
In order to function properly the human body requires both nutrients and calories.
When you stick to a steady diet of junk food and keep away from important nutrient-dense
foods like fruits and vegetables it will have a negative effect on your health.
So try to prevent your junk food cravings as far as possible.
However it is very easy to give in to the cravings. Sometimes you smell others
eating something around you; you watch the food commercials on prime-time television
or after drinking diet sodas you feel like having some snacks. Moreover food
manufacturers are always coming out with something new and you want to try them
out. But remember when losing weight is one of your top priorities you should
make healthier food choices.
How do you eliminate (or at least control) your junk food habit? First, you
should identify your weaknesses and then develop a game plan for gradually changing
your food habits. Recent reports indicate that if you make positive changes
and maintain them for around 6 to 9 weeks then you will usually be able to live
with them forever. You cannot change your habits at once. Make a few changes
every 3 weeks so that it does not inconvenience your lifestyle. But at the same
time you will reap the benefits of healthy eating.
Keep junk food out of your home, office or even the car. Clean out your refrigerator
and cupboards of everything that is unhealthy. Otherwise it will be difficult
to control the urge to eat when the foods you love are right under your nose.
Stock them up with fresh foods like fruits, vegetables, skim milk, yogurt, low
fat snacks, lean meats and poultry. Keep them in single serving bags so that
you do not indulge in excess quantities.
Avoid situations when you are particularly tempted to having junk food. For
example if sitting in front of the television all evening will encourage you
to munch on some chips then avoid doing it. Instead you can take a walk or do
some gardening during that time. Else you can substitute a healthy snack for
the junk food you crave. You can opt for a serving of fat free chocolate pudding
when you are craving for that chocolate bar. In this way you will save calories
and also ensure yourself a healthy living. Grilled chicken sandwiches, fat free
chips, sandwiches with no cheese and a small amount of mayonnaise and salads
with light dressing are available at most fast-food restaurants and are much
healthier choices than junk food. Moreover include daily exercise in your schedule
and drink a minimum of eight glasses of water per day. Often people tend to
confuse thirst with hunger and consume junk food when thirsty. This should be
strictly avoided. Read the food labels before you buy something. But you should
not take the labels at face value. Often many low-carb or low-fat items are
very high in calories and can be dangerous for you.
So eliminate junk foods from your daily diet. These foods only hurt your health
and body. Recent reports indicate that people who avoid junk food for long periods
have no interest in returning to that eating style because the benefits of healthy
eating are so strong. A food makeover is all you need to get rid of those unwanted
pounds.
